The problematic

One of the largest agricultural companies in the US (Fortune 100), foresees the declining reserve of plant nutrients around the world and the increasing pressure for renewable products. This company plans to replace mined fertilizers by biochar in their specialized products. The company considers biochar made from wood wastes or from ag wastes as an added green value and a way to bring unmined nutrients.

The solution

GECA helped the company in the selection of the optimal biochar and the selections of the biochar providers. This was crucial as the biochar required for this application needed very specific physico-chemical properties.

The impact

One biochar-based fertilizers is already on the market. Others are under development. These products decrease the need for mining plant nutrients, reducing the environmental footprint of fertilizers.
