The Use of Biochar in Pig Production

$5.00

Authors: Melissa Leung and Suzanne Allaire

In this report, GECA has examined the entire body of existing literature on the subject of biochar or activated carbon use in pig production. We include biochar properties, dosage and fabrication methods when available. Key points addressing the effects of dietary biochar on animals are included. This report was produced as a tool for pig producers, not as a scientific literature review article.

The overall results from the literature suggest that the addition of biochar or AC in the diet of pigs tends to:

• Increase weight gain

• Improve feed conversion, general health and vitality

• Improve resistance to food contamination such as toxins and pathogens

• Increase resistance to certain diseases

• Improve meat quality

• Reduce odours and greenhouse gas emissions
